How to use essential oils to help balance your chakras

Each of the seven chakras relates to an energy centre within your body ranging from the top of the head to the bottom of the spine and they impact both emotional and physical health. In the ever increasingly fast-paced, competitive and stressful world that we live in today, it is easy for chakras to become blocked and for the energy flow to become disturbed.   A blocked chakra can negatively impact your physical health and emotional well being, so identifying blockages with your chakras and fixing this can help in every aspect of your life, from taking on new challenges to handling relationships and preventing illnesses. In order to thrive both physically and emotionally, all chakras have to be open and aligned. If just one chakra is closed or out of alignment, this can create negativity and you will struggle to achieve desired outcomes in life.

Here we provide a quick guide to balancing each of the chakras for a happier and healthier life:

Crown (Sahasrara)

Element: Thought

Colour - Violet

This chakra is associated with clarity and wisdom, and a healthy crown chakra will provide you with spiritual oneness, wisdom and perfect clarity of thought. It is the highest chakra, sitting at the top of your head and can impact feelings of self worth, peacefulness and excitement levels. Signs of a blocked crown chakra can include:

  • Lack of motivation to achieve set goals
  • Feelings of depression
  • Isolation
  • Loneliness
  • Spiritually disconnected

Physical symptoms of a blocked chakra can manifest themselves in various ways including headaches, insomnia, neurological disorders and depression.

By setting yourself a simple meditation exercise each day, you can unblock your crown chakra and repair your mental wellbeing. To prepare yourself for this, you will need:

Crystal: Selenite (for motivation), clear quartz (for spiritual attunement) or amethyst (for clarity of mind)

Essential Oil: Frankincense -  this essential oil is connected to to the crown chakra as it is spiritually charged and offers mental peace and clarity

Get into a comfortable position for a 5-10 minute meditation, hold your chosen crystal in one hand and ensure the scent of the essential oil is in the air - this could be through the use of a diffuser or oil burner. Breathe slowly, inhaling through your mouth and exhaling through your nose and imagine a lotus flower at the top of your head with the petals uncurling to release the most brilliant and dazzling violet light. Picture the light getting brighter and warming the top of the head, allow yourself to feel the warmth spreading down through your body.

Repeat the following affirmations:

  • “I am constantly connected to my highest self.”
  • “I am on this earth to make a difference.”
  • “I am attuned to the divine energy of the universe.”
  • “I know my own spiritual truth and I live in accordance with it.”
  • “I am open to divine guidance.”
  • “I see the beauty in the world and I embrace it.”
  • “I emit light that attracts others who will bring love into my life.”
  • “I am love, I am light, and I am joy.”
  • “I am at one with the world around me.”
  • “I am confident, happy and sure of my worth.”

Other oils that can be used for the crown chakra: Rosewood, Jasmine, Rose, Neroli

Carry your stones with you throughout the day and drop some essential oil on a handkerchief that you can keep with you to help stay focused on the clearing your crown chakra and retain clarity of mind even in stressful situations.

The same steps can be followed for each of the remaining chakras, using the appropriate stones, oils and affirmations:

Third Eye (Ajna)

Element: Extra sensory perception

Colour: Indigo

Crystal: Amethyst, Purple Fluorite, Black Obsidian

Essential Oil: Lavender oil - calming (calms the active mind), helps to relieve headaches (which can happen when third eye is blocked)

Other Oils: Rosemary, Juniper, Lemon, Pine, Helichrysum, Thyme, Clary Sage

The third eye chakra is associated with spiritual alignment and can affect our dreams, values, thoughts, and higher levels of consciousness and enlightenment. The third eye chakra sits where the name suggests, in between your eyes. A blocked third eye chakra can impact your ability to trust your gut instincts and intuitions. Signs of a blocked Ajna can include mental and physical symptoms including:

  • Insomnia
  • Clumsiness
  • Inability to learn new things
  • Headaches
  • Emotional instability
  • Sinus pain
  • Back or leg pain

Unblocking your third eye chakra will help regain a better sense of personal wellbeing, and gain back trust in your intuition. The best way to clear a third eye chakra is with bright sunlight so get outside if you can to perform your meditation.

Meditation techniques should centre around focusing on a purple ball of energy in the centre of your brow where the third eye is located. Visualise the purple ball getting bigger and warmer and purging your body of negative energy as it does so. Imagine yourself receiving the energy from the purple ball and allow yourself to imagine it flowing throughout your whole body.

Repeat the following affirmations:

  • “I follow the lead of my inner teacher.”
  • “I know how to make the right decisions, and I do so with ease.”
  • “I hear my intuitions and I know they will lead me to my purpose.”
  • “I am on my true path.”
  • “I live every day in accordance with my life’s purpose.”
  • “I trust the guidance that my third eye gives me.”
  • “I have unlimited possibilities available to me.”
  • “I am an intuitive person, and I know what is right for me.”
  • “It is safe and good to follow the guidance of my third eye.”
  • “My third eye is open and ready to see my purpose.”

Throat Chakra (Vishudha)

Crystals: Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Aquamarine

Essential Oil: Eucalyptus - clears throat, helps with cough, clears airways to allow for self-expression

Other Oils: Blue Chamomile, Myrrh, Cypress, Basil, Hyssop, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sandalwood

The throat chakra is associated with the centre of self-expression and communication since the throat and mouth are used to communicate with others and express oneself. Sometimes feelings of guilt can block the throat chakra as can holding on to ugly thoughts or emotions. It’s important to work through the negativity held within to allow yourself to get beyond these feelings and reach a more positive state by speaking truth. The throat chakra is also associated with the etheric body and connects you to your spirit.

Symptoms of a blocked throat chakra can include:

  • Uncharacteristic levels of introversion
  • Insecurity
  • Timidity
  • Shyness when speaking with others
  • Fear of public speaking

Sometimes the energy flow reaches a bottle neck around the throat area and this can cause the throat chakra to become blocked. If you can’t quite realise your dreams or full potential, it may be because of this.

Symptoms of an overactive throat chakra can include:

  • Verbal aggression
  • Gossiping
  • Unable to keep secrets

Unblock your throat chakra to boost confidence, release creativity, unlock your purpose in life and project your ideas into reality.

Restoring balance in the throat chakra can include releasing negative emotions through talking them through, having a good cry, practicing mindful speech and meditation. Carry the colour blue with you on a daily basis (which stimulates the fifth chakra) to maintain focus and use eucalyptus oil to help clear the throat.

When meditating, prepare your space by sitting comfortably in a quiet room and burn some eucalyptus oil which helps to clear the airways, and surround yourself with blue colours. Breathe deeply, in through the mouth and out through the nose and feel yourself relaxing from the top of the head to the tips of the toes. Visualise a blue ball spinning over your throat and picture the ball glowing brighter and bigger while allowing yourself to feel the throat relaxing open (this is where the eucalyptus oil will help!). Finally, allow the energy to flow through your body and when you are ready, open your eyes.

Affirmations to use during meditation:

  • “I can vocalize my emotions, no matter what they are.”
  • “My voice is important in this world.”
  • “I honor my true voice, and I let it speak.”
  • “I am an empathetic listener and a clear communicator.”
  • “When I speak, my contributions are honest but balanced.”
  • “I can find the right words in all situations.”
  • “Others hear my voice.”
  • “I speak my true thoughts with ease.”
  • “Let go of doubt about the word I ‘should’ have said.”
  • “I am always understood by others.”

To unblock your heart chakra, carry stones or wear jewellery connected to the heart chakra, and use rose essential oil to help generate feelings of love and compassion, and alleviate feelings of depression.

In meditation, you should find a comfortable and quiet area where you will not be disturbed and prepare your area with rose infused air - this could be through the use of a diffuser or oil burner.
