Lemon (Citrus limonum)
Lemon oil is popular for its refreshing, uplifting and invigorating scent, and its antioxidant properties. It has been used in Ayurveda medicine for over 1,000 years, to cleanse, rejuvenate and detoxify the body and mind. Lemon oil’s versatility means that it is “essential” to have on hand, whether to boost your mood or to relieve nausea
What does Lemon oil smell like?
Like all citrus oils, lemon oil has a refreshing, tangy fragrance which instantly elevates the mood. We liken the fragrance to what we imagine bottled sunshine would be.
Where does Lemon oil originate from?
Citrus Limonum is a flowering plant belonging to the Rutaceae family. Although Lemon plants are native to Asia, they are now grown across the globe, having been brought to europe circa 200AD. Lemon essential oil is extracted by cold pressing the lemon peel, not the inner fruit.
What are the properties of Lemon oil?
Lemon essential oil is popular because of its purifying and cleaning properties. It’s ability to cut through grease is why it’s commonly found in household cleaning products. Use Lemon essential oil to boost oral health, purify the body, nourish the skin and relieve feelings of nausea and coughs.
Lemon essential oil can help alleviate the following ailments:
- Anxiety and nervous tension
- Fluid retention
- High blood pressure
- Leucorrhoea (vaginal discharge)
- Menstrual cramps
- Muscular aches and pains
How to use Lemon oil
If your hands are greasy from working on cars or bikes, or simply from prepping a good meal, add a couple of drops of Lemon essential oil to your soap. You’ll have you clean, film-free hands back in no time.
Add 2-3 drops of Lemon oil to your diffuser to improve your mood and awaken your senses.
Soak an old cloth with 10 drops of Lemon essential oil and rub gently on tarnished silver and jewellery. Your items will be gleaming in no time, without the use of harsh chemicals.
Inhale Lemon oil directly from the bottle to help clear mucus and alleviate congestion. Similarly, combine 5-6 drops Lemon essential oil with a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to the chest and back as a natural alternative to Vicks vapour rub.
