Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang, meaning “flower of flowers” is one of the key ingredients in the iconic Chanel No.5 perfume. Ylang Ylang essential oil is highly prized for its thickening effect on hair and its positive influence on the immune system. In Indonesia, Ylang Ylang flowers have been strewn on the beds of newly weds for centuries. The strong fragrance increases self-confidence and sexual energy, so Ylang Ylang essence is a great choice if you’re feeling a little amorous. If not, Ylang Ylang essential oil is also said to help relieve stress and tension.

What does Ylang-Ylang smell like?

An intoxicating, sweet floral fragrance with nuances of banana, custard and Jasmine. The scent of Ylang-Ylang is exceptionally delicate, and the oil itself has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac.

Where does Ylang-Ylang originate from?

Cananga odorata, also known as the canaga tree is an exotic, woody, evergreen tree that originates in Indonesia. The essential oil, Ylang Ylang, is extracted from its fragrant, star-shaped flowers. Cananga odorata is known as the perfume tree in places such as The Cook Islands, Hawaii and Fiji.

How to use Ylang-Ylang essential oil

Simply mix Ylang Ylang with a cup of epsom bath salts for a relaxing bath, that will soothe your skin and give you a great self-confidence boost.

You can use Ylang Ylang essential oil to steam your face and soothe inflammation. To do this, boil some water and allow to cool for a few moments. If you can hold your hand above the steam comfortable, it’s ready to use on your face. Add 2-5 drops of Ylang-Ylang essence to the bowl and, with your head covered in a towel, lower your face 6 inches above the bowl and allow the steam to open your pores for 5 minutes. This shouldn’t be painful, so if it hurts, just let the water cool down a little more.

You can use Ylang-Ylang  on your wrists as a sweet, fragrant perfume. As always, dilute with a carrier oil before adding directly to your skin. Alternately, add a drop or two to a lava stone or a ribbon.

Ylang-Ylang is great for restoring hair’s natural shine and strength. To create a deep hair condition, mix 5 drops of Ylang-Ylang with a cup of fractionated coconut.

You can also mix Ylang-Ylang essence with a carrier oil such as sweet almond, and massage into the shoulders, back or feet to promote inner peace and to help slow down the heart rate. This is a great way to wind down after a particularly stressful day.
